Joan Hecht adopted Ezekiel Kong Deng, one of the lost boys. When he passed away, Joan realized what she really wanted to do and decided to help the lost boys. She created an organization, Alliance for the Lost Boys of Sudan. They provided the lost boys with their needs; medical cover, dental cover, education, school supplies, survival program, vital services, preventions project, and sexual violence aids.
Ever since war broke out in Southern Sudan and North Sudan, young boys from the South were forced to leave their homes and became orphans. The young children, all boys, ran to find a refugee camp for safety. A year after their families were killed, they found a refugee camp in Ethiopia. Not long after their safety was found, communists took over the government and the Lost boys were forced to run. They crossed the dangerous river, Gilo where almost half of the lost boys drowned or devoured by crocodiles. Two years after, the Lost boys found another camp in Kenya, a camp named Kakuma.
